The Big Red Fire Engine

Meet Big Red — our unmistakable fire engine glamping pod in Herefordshire, and without doubt the boldest stay on the meadow.

Once a hardworking emergency vehicle, this lovingly restored fire engine has been reimagined as a quirky, eco-conscious retreat that sleeps up to six. There’s a cosy main sleeping area for four, plus two additional single beds in the lounge — perfect for little adventurers. Inside, you’ll find practical 12v power and phone charging points, while outside a private outdoor kitchen and seating area make alfresco cooking and stargazing evenings effortless.

Ideal for families, small groups, or anyone craving something delightfully different near Bodenham, Big Red combines charm, comfort and countryside escape in one truly memorable stay.

This retired engine was brought back to life by our family team as a heartfelt tribute to Leading Firefighter Tony Sandford, who proudly served the local Herefordshire community.

How It Began

The team at Kingfisher Meadow have always had a soft spot for fire engines, so when we first saw this old Dennis appliance looking a little sad and forgotten, we knew we had to do something special with it. After many years of proud service in the fire brigade, this wonderful machine deserved more than to be left behind. With a bit of imagination and a lot of care, we set about giving it a new lease of life. Carefully restored and thoughtfully converted, it now enjoys a far more relaxed role — helping families unwind and enjoy the countryside.

After a lifetime spent rushing to emergencies and keeping people safe, this old appliance has finally earned the chance to slow down, put its wheels up, and spend its days providing a unique and memorable stay for our guests. The restoration was also carried out in memory of Leading Firefighter Tony Sandford, who proudly served Hereford & Worcester Fire Brigade for many years. In its new life here on the meadow, the engine continues its tradition of looking after people — just in a much quieter and more peaceful way.
